Information Society Educating and Research Groups (ISERG)

The ISERG is an educating and research group, which from an organization point of view is assigned to a (topic-friend) department, establishment or group of the selected institute. The network started on its way in 2003, when with the support of the Information and Telecommunication Ministry, Information Society Educating and Research Group small in number was set up in ten or twelve, than in 2004 in a further twelve or fifteen universities and colleges. In the past years, cross-border groups too joined the network. Such groups in some institute organize themselves into a national network, their heads mutually develop the curriculum, take over experiences from each other, are in class in each other’s institutes and launch joint research programs.

Such a kind of horizontal co-operation is a path-breaker in the Hungarian high education and is considered unique even in international relationships. This program is co-ordinated by the Budapest University of Technology and Economics looking back on as many as a decade of past in information society education and research. As instructors, the ISERG staff members are employees of the given institute, meanwhile are partners in various research programs of the domestic information society. The ISERGs of rural universities and colleges play a role of information propagation and ’think tank’. Education of the discipline Information Society is organized in a network (subject concept, draft, textbook, trade publications, presentation aids, further education, change of experience). As instructors and researchers too, they are specialized to cultivate the issues relevant to the profile of the institute.

A head of group is present in an institute as the instructor of two disciplines in general.

  • Under the title ’Information Society’, he teaches a basic discipline, which is considered more or less uniform on a countryside scale, because its theme, textbook, presentation paper and renewing literature is provided by the network coordination. Using their experiences and innovations, teachers continuously develop this 'collective' discipline. Once a year, they meet at a workshop conference.
  •  In any part theme of the information society cultivated by them, they conduct special courses. Together with their local university / college work-mates and students, the groups conduct research programs of their own, thus collective knowledge are validly used for particular localities or move towards realization, representing a special research partially built on the head of group’s personality. In a good case, the group registered in a given institute will be a respected leading research workshop of a certain partial issue.

Any head of group shall be suitable to play the role of a regional think tank, adviser, what is more, a project manager. By a small effort and external support, the receptive institutes may establish educating / research workshops, where they

  • introduce an important basic discipline communicating a current and up-to-date knowledge
  • create new research and project potential, chances for resources, making new way for the students’ professional employment
  •  strengthen the regional embedding of the institute
  •  improve the attraction of the institute, send a message of keeping step and elasticity toward professional circles and to-be students too.

The present coordinator of the ISERG network is Árpád Rab.
